Your First Recruiting Message Is About Them - Not You
By Phillip Gagnon · August 10, 2026 · 3 min read
Imagine you walk into a party and someone immediately hands you a brochure about themselves. Their accomplishments, their awards, their vision. You would smile politely, pocket the brochure, and drift toward the snack table. That is exactly what most first recruiting messages feel like to the agent reading them.
The Mirror Problem
I see it constantly. A broker sits down, fires up their CRM, and writes something like: 'We have the best splits in the market, incredible training, and a culture you have to experience.' Every single word points back at the sender. The agent on the other end is thinking one thing: so what does this mean for me? When your opening message is a mirror reflecting your brokerage, you have already lost the room.
The golden rule of recruiting is simple: deliver the right message to the right agent at the right time. And the right message is always about them. Their production. Their market. Their goals. Their friction. Not your splits, not your brand, not your fancy technology stack.
Do Your Homework First
Before you write a single word, you need to know who you are writing to. Pull their MLS data. Look at their transaction volume, their price point, their farm area. Is their production trending up or plateauing? Are they working a neighborhood that aligns with your office footprint? That research is not optional - it is the whole game. When an agent reads your message and thinks 'how did they know that about me?', you have their attention.
Here is a simple frame that works: lead with an observation about their business, follow with a genuine question, and hold your brokerage story for later. Something like: 'I noticed you closed eight transactions in Riverside Heights last year - that market is moving fast. What is driving your focus there?' That is it. No pitch. No split. Just curiosity about them.
Curiosity Is the Opening Move
Curiosity signals respect. It says you did the work. It separates you from the broker who blasted the same template to four hundred agents on a Tuesday morning. Agents can smell a mass outreach from three paragraphs away. A specific, researched question cannot be faked, and it cannot be ignored the way a generic pitch can.
At 3 Data Pulse, we help brokers build a focused daily habit - five new agents a day, researched and messaged with intention. Not five hundred. Five. The discipline is in the specificity, and the specificity is what starts a real conversation.
What to Do This Week
1. Pick five agents in your market whose production genuinely impresses you. 2. Pull their last twelve months of transaction data and find one specific observation worth noting. 3. Write a single opening message - under four sentences - that asks a genuine question about their business. 4. Send it and wait. Resist the urge to follow up with your pitch deck. Let curiosity do the heavy lifting first.
The relationship starts with that first message. Make it count by making it about them.
Until next time, keep nurturing those connections. - Phillip
