The First Message Nobody Reads (And How to Fix It)

The First Message Nobody Reads (And How to Fix It)

Picture two salespeople knocking on your door. The first one launches straight into a pitch about their company, their awards, their commission splits. The second one says, 'I noticed you closed four deals in the Riverside corridor last quarter - that is a specific skill set, and I wanted to reach out.' Which one gets invited inside? You already know the answer.

The Mistake Most Brokers Make First

The default recruiting message reads like a press release about your brokerage. Your culture, your tools, your training, your brand. I get it - you are proud of what you have built. You should be. But the agent on the other end of that message is not thinking about you. They are thinking about their pipeline, their clients, and whether Tuesday's closing is going to fund their mortgage. When your message is about you, it lands in the delete folder before the second sentence.

The golden rule of recruiting is this: deliver the right message to the right agent at the right time. All three parts matter, but 'right message' is where most brokers stumble on the very first touch.

Make It Specific, Make It About Them

Specificity is the proof that you actually looked. Anyone can say, 'I think you would be a great fit.' Almost nobody says, 'You have been consistently closing in the $400K-$600K range in a market where most agents scatter across every price point - that kind of focus is exactly what we are building here.' One feels like a form letter. The other feels like a conversation that already started.

Before you write a single word, ask yourself three questions. What do I genuinely know about this agent's production? What does that tell me about what they value? And what can I offer that actually speaks to where they are headed - not where I want them to go?

The Tiny Detail That Changes Everything

Reference something real. A recent listing, a neighborhood they dominate, a review a client left them online. Not in a creepy way - in a 'I did my homework because I respect your work' way. That one detail signals that this is not a mass blast. It signals intention. And intention is the beginning of trust.

I always say: people join people, not firms or mailing lists. Your first message is your first chance to be a person, not a pitch deck.

What to Do Right Now

Pull up the profile of one agent you have been meaning to reach out to. Before you type anything, spend five minutes learning one specific thing about their business. Then write your message around that one thing. Keep it short. Ask nothing. Just show them you see them. That is the message that gets a reply.

Start with five agents this week - not five hundred. Do it right, and watch what happens to your response rate.

Until next time, keep nurturing those connections.
