AI Is a Lousy Closer (But a Brilliant Assistant)

Here is a question I have been sitting with lately: what if the biggest risk of AI in your brokerage is not that it replaces your agents, but that it quietly strips the humanity out of every touchpoint before anyone notices?

Think about it like this. Fire is an incredible tool. It cooks your food, heats your home, and keeps the wolves at bay. But pour gasoline on it carelessly and you burn the whole thing down. AI is fire. And right now, a lot of brokers are holding a very large can of gasoline.

What AI Actually Does Well

Let me be direct about where AI earns its keep. It is extraordinary at the behind-the-scenes work that used to eat hours of your week. Drafting a first-pass outreach message based on an agent's production data. Summarizing a long recruiting conversation so you remember the key promises you made. Flagging which agents in your pipeline have gone quiet and probably need a touchpoint. Sorting market data so you can find the lookalikes of your best agents faster. That is real leverage. That is AI as your research assistant, your scheduler, your first draft writer - never your relationship manager.

Where Brokers Go Wrong

The mistake I see constantly is using AI to scale volume instead of to deepen quality. A broker discovers they can send 500 personalized-ish emails a week instead of 50 genuinely personal ones, and they think they have found a cheat code. They have not. They have just built a faster machine for making agents feel like a number. Remember the golden rule: the right message to the right agent at the right time. AI can help you get two of those three right. The third one - the right message - still requires you to actually know the person.

The Rule I Give Every Broker

Here is how I think about it: AI writes the draft, you write the relationship. Every AI-generated touchpoint should have at least one sentence that only you could have written - something that references a real conversation, a specific goal they shared, a moment you both remember. That one sentence is the proof of humanity. It is the thing that separates a message from a connection. Without it, you are just sending noise at scale.

Building the System Right

At 3 Data Pulse, we sit underneath frameworks like Ninja Selling as the execution layer - not the shiny tool you show your agents, but the system that makes sure things actually happen. AI fits that same role. It keeps your pipeline organized, your follow-up consistent, and your data clean. Then you show up to the one-on-one, fully prepared, fully present, and fully human. That is the combination that wins. Efficiency in the background, relationship in the foreground.

Here is your do-this-next list:

1. Audit your last 10 recruiting touchpoints. How many had a sentence only you could have written? If the answer is fewer than seven, your AI is doing too much of the relationship work.

2. Pick one AI tool this week and assign it exactly one behind-the-scenes job - data sorting, draft writing, or follow-up reminders. One job. Master it before you add another.

3. Set a personal rule: every AI draft gets one human edit before it goes out, and that edit must reference something real about the recipient.

AI is not your closer. It is your prep cook. You are still the chef. Until next time, keep nurturing those connections.
